I read about the newspaper thing on a forum and I do think I was doing it wrong. But in any case I'm definitely a true believer of the double dig method! I was lucky that my soil is sandy with minimal rocks.Diem Chauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10045341089709984062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116613742152848437.post-81765545568098267332011-04-19T21:28:04.634-07:002011-04-19T21:28:04.634-07:00I double dug my back garden over 12 years ago and ...I double dug my back garden over 12 years ago and never had a problem with it. It has lovely drainage and with minimal raking/hoeing every spring (sometimes with the leaf/grass clipping compost added).
While it WILL kill your back, you'll never have to put that much effort into it again.

THe newspaper thing is odd. I've heard that you put the paper down till it kills the grass/pants, then put some soil on it. After a while you till, then top off with more soil. So the paper does get broken down or "damaged" after a while.
My Father always used shredded paper, moistened, to keep his worms for fishing. So it can keep water.
~AnnAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2116613742152848437.post-79145211997990964572011-04-19T10:00:44.994-07:002011-04-19T10:00:44.994-07:00good going!
